Marty Johnson is a Sustainability Specialist for Coconino County. She has been with the County close to five years, including a brief stint, about 16 years ago, working at the County Health Department selling birth certificates and working for Maternal and Child Health. Last year, she was instrumental in creating an effective recycling initiative at the 74th Annual County Fair with little contamination and a diversion rate of 15% (measured in volume). She moved to Flagstaff from Texas in 2006 to work as an Americorps volunteer doing conservation work throughout Arizona and the southwest. She later became a wildland firefighter for both the Kaibab and Coconino National Forests. She has a varied work background with experience in higher education, non-profit organizations, and government, not to mention working as a barista off and on for over a decade. Her love of the outdoors and outdoor recreation stems from spending time in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of northern New Mexico at Philmont Boy Scout Ranch, where she later became a backpacking guide, teaching boy scouts “leave no trace” backpacking principles. She holds a master’s degree from northern Arizona University in Sustainable Communities and an undergraduate degree in Spanish from the University of North Texas. She wants to join Friends of Coconino County Parks because she was inspired by the partnership between NAU Parks and Recreation students and Friends of Coconino County Parks to put on the first ever Earth Day event in Tuba City. She would like to see more programming, especially as it relates to sustainability (trash clean up events, weed pulls, Earth Day events, etc.) in outlying areas of Coconino County. Any chance she gets, she is spending time outside with her five-year-old, three-year-old, and husband of ten years. She loves skiing (downhill and cross country), hiking, camping, going to the river, running, or biking. When he can keep up, she brings her poodle/bichon mix, mutt, Dercum along!
